Schedule
Schedule
Let's talk about your program. Here is the detailed tentative schedule. There will likely be some changes, but this gives you the fundamentals.
Below is some orientation information and discussion about the items in the schedule.
Startup and hotel. When you arrive at the program hotel in Newark, Delaware on Tuesday, June 17, we will be there to greet you. The hotel is the Springhill Suites hotel in Newark, Delaware (NOT Newark, New Jersey). Rooming is set up for 3 people in each of 10. There are 2 beds in each room and also a sleeper-sofa/trundle bed. The rooms have internet, television, microwaves, and a small refrigerator. The hotel has a small indoor swimming pool, workout room, breakfast room, and a bar that also serves a few light dishes. The hotel is near UD and near the ``college town'' area of Newark.
Meals. The hotel will provide breakfasts on workdays. We will have dinner catered to the hotel for you on most work nights. On some days, we have social outings planned for you, which can involve eating elsewhere. For your arrival day, we expect that you will might arrive fairly late in the evening, but we'll have some food for you. Lunches and weekend meals are mostly on your own. It is good to look around UD and Newark a bit soon after you arrive---at least to see where you may want to go for lunches. To help, we will have a short tour the day after you arrive. I will also show you a grocery store within walking distance of your hotel.
Getting to school. To get from the hotel to the campus each day, we will use the hotel shuttle. On nice-weather days, many students have chosen to walk to and from UD. It is a 20+ minute walk, with no hills and sidewalks. There is one busy street to cross---be careful!
There are also public buses in the area, as well as Uber. UD has a shuttle bus system, though it does not come to the hotel. Their is a public bus stop in front of the hotel and others nearby. We'll provide some info later to help you check these things out, but you may want to look around on the internet even before that. (There is a phone app for the UD Shuttle, called TransLoc. You should download it from the AppStore for your phone.)
Weather. Delaware is in the northeast part of the US, near Philadelphia. This part of the country can be warm in June, and rain is possible. Please be prepared for both. You should expect some walking around outside.
Program. The academic program will begin on Wednesday, June 18. It has several main academic components.
Trading. A series of sessions on trading and markets in our Getzeiler Trading Center. The Center is outfitted with computers, software, and video equipment oriented to trading, finance, and Bloomberg. The leader of these sessions is the Center Director, Mr. Richard Jakotowicz. Mr. Jakotowicz is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) who is the President for the Philadelphia CFA Society.
Bloomberg. A series of sessions on Bloomberg training, including time for you to earn your first-level Bloomberg Certification on using the terminal. Most of these trainings will be led by Mr. Jakotowicz, and one will be led by a Bloomberg representative---who was also my student at UD several years ago.
Guests. Several sessions with guest speakers about careers, Bloomberg, and trading ideas.
Treasury mispricing and trading opportunities illustrated with Bloomberg. Several sessions on pricing and mispricing in the Treasuries markets, with a focus on the trading opportunities this presents. These sessions will be led by Professor Matthias Fleckenstein, an expert on this topic whose work has won the Smith-Breeden Prize from the \emph{Journal of Finance}.
Trading and machine learning. Some sessions on applying machine learning to trading management problems, and a concluding sessions on the US financial system and on microstructure concepts, to help you pull together the big picture (if we can find time--the schedule is tight). I will be the leader for those sessions.
Travel and visits. The program includes some travel and visit components.
Philly. A day to visit Philadelphia and participate in a lunch-speaker event with the Philadelphia CFA Foundation. We'll stay in town for the afternoon for you can visit the historical places. We expect to do this on Tuesday, June 24. The program will provide private bus transport to and from Philly.
NYC. A final day of the program visiting New York on Friday, June 27. We expect to go to Nasdaq for the market open, and then to Bloomberg Headquarters for tour, training, and lunch. The program will get you there on a private bus, and get you to the airport at the end of the day (or leave you in midtown if you don't want to go to the airport). This day will begin very early---you'll need to be on the bus before 6am.
Baseball. We'll also have one evening ``fun'' event sponsored by the Program---an evening of baseball at the Wilmington Blue Rocks. The baseball game outing will include American picnic food style dinner at the ball park. Baseball is a deeply intellectual game. Come figure it out. We expect to do this on Thursday, June 19, with bus transport both ways provided by the program.
Travel on your own. During the middle weekend of the program (Saturday and Sunday June 21 and 22), you are free to travel on your own also. The Program hotel will still be available to you that weekend in case you want to stay in Newark, Delaware. We will not plan any meals or program events on that weekend.
End of program in NYC. Very importantly, at the end of the Program on June 27, you will be in New York City. The Program ends when we drop you in New York (at the EWR airport, if that is your plan to return home that day, or at Penn Station in Midtown if you are staying in the city), so be sure to plan what to do next, whether that is flying home or staying in the City. Especially, make your plans for lodging if needed! You are on your own for lodging beginning the night of Friday, June 27 if you stay in New York!
Welcome to the program! We are happy to work with you. This program has been good for past ISCTE students, and we are confident it will be good for you.
